How many bar staff do you need?
The short answer: 1 bar staff member per 50 guests for a standard drinks reception, rising to 1 per 35-40 for a busy opening hour or a cocktail-heavy event where drinks take longer to make.
That ratio holds because a trained bartender can serve roughly one drink per minute during steady service, but events rarely have steady demand — most guests arrive and order within the first 20-30 minutes, creating a rush that a flat guest-to-staff ratio doesn't fully capture. For events with a single arrival window (most weddings, most parties), budgeting toward the busier end of the ratio for the first hour avoids a queue forming right when first impressions matter most.
Cocktail bars need more staff per guest than a wine-and-beer bar, since each drink takes longer to make. If you're serving cocktails, treat your guest count as though it were 1.5 times larger when applying the ratio above.
