How this is worked out

Canapés are calculated at 8 pieces per guest for a reception-length event. Buffets assume 1.5 portions per guest, since people tend to take smaller amounts of several dishes. Plated meals assume exactly 1 portion per guest. We add a 10% buffer across the board, and estimate a 10% dietary-requirement allowance separately.

Worked example

For 80 guests on a buffet: 80 × 1.5 = 120 portions. With a 10% buffer that's 132 portions. Around 8 of those should be catered for common dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ask guests for dietary requirements directly?

Yes — this figure is a planning estimate. Always collect actual dietary requirements through RSVPs where possible, especially for allergies.

Does this include children?

Count children as half a portion each and add them to your guest total, unless your caterer offers a separate children's menu.
