How this is worked out
If a top table is included, we seat the wedding party there first (typically 6-12 people depending on table size), then divide remaining guests across standard tables. Floor space uses 5.4m² per round table or 4.5m² per long table (including chair clearance and aisle gaps).
Worked example
80 guests with an 8-seat top table leaves 72 to seat. At 8 per round table that's 9 tables, plus the top table — 10 in total. At 5.4m² each, you need roughly 54m² of dining floor space.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include space for a dance floor or bar?
No — the floor space figure covers only the dining area. Add 20m² for a dance floor and 15m² for a bar, or use our marquee size calculator for the full picture.
How many people should sit at the top table?
Traditionally the couple plus both sets of parents and the best man/maid of honour — usually 6-8 people. We default to your chosen table size; adjust the seats-per-table or remove the top table entirely.
Round or long tables — which is better?
Round tables encourage group conversation and are the UK standard for weddings. Long tables feel more informal and sociable but take more coordination to seat well.
